Formal Units
Formal units are much more accurate and use items such as a ruler, a tape measure or for much larger areas, a trundle wheel.
Small units of length are called millimeters. 1mm is about as thick as mum or dads credit card.

10mm makes up 1cm which is about as wide as your pencil and from centimeters we move into meters, which you would use to measure a football field for example. 1m is equal to 100cm.
